| Davis Osborne of Indiana (#403- left) leads Indiana to a 29 point victory
|
The 2009 Mid East meet was no disappointment to those who came to see the Midwest’s top seniors compete in Kettering, Ohio. Indiana came out on top of the combined scoring, riding on the heels of their boys 29 point victory. Illinois' girls won the first title for the Prairie State, as 17 points separated all four girls teams.
The girls race ended up being tighter than was expected, and wasn't without drama. The race started out with Indiana runner up Dana Payonk heading to the lead with fellow Hoosier Dani Sullivan as well as Illinois' Alexis Goldsmith and Ashley Sellars. By the 800 meter mark, Ohio's Katelyn Walker joined the group as they winded through the baseball fields at Indian Riffle Park. As the group came through the mile mark in just under 5:40, they were joined by Ohio State Champion Meredith Wagner. As the group moved past the baseball field and headed up the first of two times over the Riffle Park hill, the group thinned to Goldsmith and the Ohio trio, as Allison Stillwell joined the leaders.
As the course traversed through the forest, the team race became tighter, but one thing started to become clear, Meredith Wagner was pulling away from the field. Team wise, each team had three runners in the top twelve with Ohio holding first, third, and fifth place. Illinois had Goldsmith in second, and Sellers in sixth, and McKinzie Schulz moving into the fourth position. Michigan's Devan Sullivan and Melinda Palinkas were in seventh and eighth followed by Indiana's front three.
Heading up the hill for the second time, Wagner opend up a fifty to sixty meter lead over Goldsmith. It was at the top of the hill that Wagner appeared to stumble. Heading down the hill she was visibly hurting, but regaining momentum. About 100 meters past the bottom of the hill, Wagner pulled up. Meanwhile Stillwell made a move over the hill and passed Goldsmith. At the 4k mark, the pair moved past a stopped Wagner and Stillwell encouraged her to keep going.
"After I passed her, I just tried to open up the gap to get first and to take her place" related Stillwell. "I was just trying to get ready for the final turn because I knew it would come to a sprint."
Over the last half mile, she did open up the gap, eventually winning by 11 seconds. Wagner's dropping out had a profound effect on the team race. Ohio moved from first to fourth by adding 20 points after the 4k mark. Meanwhile, the Illinois girls, which came in with the tightest 1-5 state meet split, ran extremely well for the last 800 meters and saw Schulz move into third. Sandburg's Kim Christensen finished in 12th and Sarah Reynolds of Hersey finished in 20th to wrap up the Illinois scoring with 44 points. Seven points separated the final three teams.
The boys race ended up being a blowout. The start of the race saw a sea of orange rush to the front, as the Illinois boys took the race out very aggressively. The were followed by a tight Ohio pack while race favorites Indiana sat back.
The mile mark saw a change in the lead as the Hoosiers moved up to the front along with an Ohio and Michigan runner. Two things were clear at the mile mark- Indiana was here to race and Illinois went out too hard.
Over the hill and moving into the woods around the 1.5 mile mark, an individual race began to emerge. Ohio's Connor Paez, the Ohio runner up, held a slight lead over Indiana's David Osborn and Alejandro Arroyo. Indiana's Scott Vicenzi and Michigan's Ian Hanke and Alex Wilson were also holding tight to the lead. Also at this point, Indiana had five runners in the top 10.
Coming out of the woods and right before the 2 mile mark, Osborn and Arroyo made a move to separate themselves from the rest of the field. They came through the 2 mile mark at 10:02. Not willing to let an opportunity pass him by, Michigan's Nathan Karr made a move to go with the Indiana pair.
Karr used the momentum from that move to pull into the lead for the next half mile, pulling Osborn with him. The pair slowly moved away from Arroyo. At this point, however, Indiana had six runners in the top ten places. Michigan has three in the top seven.
At the 4k mark, it was Osborn and Karr in the lead, with Osborn holding a slight edge. Indiana's Tom Ohlman from Carmel had now moved into third, while Arroyo was hanging on to fourth.
Over the last half mile, it Osborn made one final move to open up a four second lead which he carried to the finish line for the win. "It was a great day, and was a good win." stated Osborn, who has committed to Oklahoma State.
Running a race in direct contrast to his state meet race, Karr's conservative race plan enabled him to hold on to second place.
Ohio and Michigan runners also moved up in the last half mile, however it was too little too late as they were unable to overcome the front running Hoosiers. Ohio was able to hold on to second place with 45 points, while Michigan ended with 57. Illinois managed to put one runner in the top ten, Jake Ferris of Plainfield South in 9th, but amounted a dismal 123 points to finish fourth.

The Twenty third running of the annual Mid East Cross Country Championships features the top available seniors from Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and host Ohio. While the number of states competeing in the meet have dwindled down to make the meet a mere quadranular, the quality of competition has not dropped off.
The meet returns once again to Indian Ripple Park in Kettering, Ohio, but will see a different course. This will mark only the third course change in the meet's history.
In the boys race, Indiana appears to be the team to beat. Based upon their state meet results, they bring a group of Seniors who hold a :18 split between their first and fifth runners. Leading the way for the Hoosiers will be Brownsburg's Scott Vicenzi, the 3rd place finisher at the IHSAA meet. Vicenzi ran 16:02 for 5 kilometers on a wet and sloppy LaVerne Gibson course. he will be joined by Chesterton's David Osborn (4th-16:06), Culver Academy's Alejandro Arroyo Yamin (6th- 16:06), Nathan Hendershot of Pendleton Heights (7th- 16:20), and Carmel's Tom Ohlman (8th-16:20). The hoosiers bring depth as well, as 11 of their 12 runners finished All-State.
Defending boys champions Illinois will not be giving away the title. Currentl they appear to be the best challenge for the title, and bring in a top five that all broke 15:00 for three miles at the Illinois State Meet. Prospect's Chris Spudic was the top finisher for the Illini at the IHSA meet, placing 5th in 14:34. Cary Grove's Phil Fairleigh finished 12th in 14:50, Romeoville's Sergio Miranda was 14th in 14:52, Jake Ferris of Plainfield South was 16th also in 14:52, and New Trier's Noah Graboys finished 22nd in 14:57. For the Illini to compete against the hoosiers, they will need to beat them up front and get some help from the other states.
If Illinois fails to put up some front runners, look for Michigan to sneak in for the title. 13 seconds separated the top five runners at this years Michigan State Meet. Michigan will be lead by the division 3 third place finisher in Paul Lewis of Albion, and the Division 4 State Champ Kyle Stacks of Concord. Pioneer's Nick and Adam Kern will contend for a top five finish on the Michigan team as will Kent City's Alex Wilson.
Host Ohio contends for the title every year, and this year will be no different. Ohio State runner up Connor Paez will be leading the Buckeye's. Paezfinished only 4 seconds behind super junior Zach Wills at this years Ohio State Championships. Kyle Wheeler finished 3rd at the OHSA meet, running 15:55, six seconds behind Paez. Six different athletes will battle for the last three scoring spots for Ohio. Based upon their state meet finishes, Ohio has a 14 second gap between their top five runners.
While pack running will be the name of the game in the boys race, it will be a completely different type of race on the girls side. All teams feature good front runners, leaving both the team and individual races up for grabs.
Ohio brings in their state's division 1 champion in Meredith Wagner of Sylvania Northview. Wagner, who ran 18:03 for 5k at the OHSA meet, bypassed last week's NXN midwest meet where Ohio natives sweept the top three spots. Tri-Valley's Allison Stillwell ran 18:23 to finish fifth in the division 1 meet. Look for Katelyn Walker of Shaker Heights (OHSA 12th place, 18:52), Sarah Baker of Mt. Vernon (14th- 18:57), and Megan Wright of Miamisburg (15th- 18:59) to all contribute to the scoring.
The tightest pack in the girls meet will come from Michigan, where they put their top seniors within 30 seconds of one another at the MHSAA meet. Division 3 state champion Deven John of Allendale looks to lead the Michiganders. John finished with a 5k time of 18:30. Kate Carter of Saline ran 18:39, while Kristina Parks of East Kentwood and Kristen Yarows of Dexter both eclipsed the 19:00 mark running 18:41 and 18:47 respectively. Look for Emma Drenth of Williamstown and Breeann Ovokaitys of Cedar Springs to contribute to the scoring.
Illinois has a great 1-2 punch in Sandburg teammates Kim Christensen and Lexie Goldsmith. The duo finished 3rd and 4th overall at the IHSA State Meet, running 17:19 and 17:20 respectively. 2008 NXN finalist Meghan Heuer of St. Charles North finished in 21st (17:53) at the IHSA meet, and Ashley Sellers 25th (17:56) both garnishing All-State honors. Erin Poss of Antioch finshed 6th in the Class AA meet running 17:58. Among the intangibles for the Illini include McKinzie Schulz of Benet. Schulz was a member of the USATF Youth National team, making the finals of the steeplechase in Sudtirol, Italy. Schulz was a two time all-state cross country runner (2006 & 2008).
Indiana brings IHSAA state runner up Dana Payonk to lead the Hoosiers in Kettering. Payonk ran 19:15 at the state finals on the sloppy Terre Haute course. She will be joined by fellow all-state runners Dani Sullivan of Franklin Central (10th- 19:49), Kate DeSimone of Fort Wayne Canterbury (15th- 19:53), Siri Retrun of State Champion Columbus North (16th- 19:53), Allie Pladson of Northridge (19th- 19:57), and Kaylee McClanahan of Fort Wayne(21st- 19:58).
Bobby Kennedy of Ohio won the inagural Mid East meet, and was the first of three future Olympians to win the meet. The two others include Amy Yoder of Indiana and Jorge Torres of Illinois.
