2008 Interview with Katherin Rehn

Lyons Senior Katherine Rehn finishing 16th at the 2008 State XC Meet
My name is Katherin Rehn and I’m a senior at Lyons Township High School.
LT is in Class 3A and we are easily the largest team in the state, if not the country with over 200 girls.
It’s awesome to have such a huge team that supports each other. I started running in 6th grade at my middle school (LaGrange Highlands) under Mr. Larry Hays. He was an awesome coach who helped instill a love for running in me that I am very thankful for.

My high school career has sort of been a roller coaster so far. Luckily, I have been able to improve my times
and places throughout each season and at the state meet. After overcoming an iron deficiency my sophomore year,
I became an All-Stater in cross country and track (4x800 relay) during my junior year. I am hoping to continue
improving this year by finishing higher up at the state meet this year. I also think that my team is going to be
awesome this year and hopefully we can bring home another trophy.

My first meet of my senior season has started off way different then I thought it was going to. I was the
photographer for our end of the season slideshow. During the month of July, I tripped while doing running drills
and landed on my left leg funny. I went to the doctor and he told me to take ten days off. After taking the prescribed
amount of time off, I still had pain in my left leg. I got an MRI done on my leg and found out that I have a bruised
tibia :(. I’m getting an MRI done on it again this week to see how it is doing and will hopefully be back running soon!
Everything happens for a reason, so I’m hoping that now I’ll feel refreshed and ready to run fast at State and beyond!

Cabin 13, aka 28 from the Sub 5 Camp this summer

I had a really fun summer aside from getting injured. The highlight of my summer was definitely my time at Sub 5 Running Camp.
It was my fifth and final year of being a camper. I get to be a Jr. counselor next year, so I’m already excited for it. My cabin
(Cabin 13, a.k.a. 28) had a ton of fun with Liz Labuz, our counselor. The mud fights, trail runs, ice baths in the waterfall at
the creek, crazy clothes challenges with a twist, assassins game, interesting tasting food, skit night, friends made, and
inspiring mind fit sessions run by Janet Leet (owner of the camp) definitely make the Sub 5 Camp experience amazing.

Well, I better get back to that Psychology paper on Clark Hull…

Good Luck with your seasons!

Hi Everyone!
This past week flew by pretty quickly with there only being four days of school (one of them was a late start day:)).
Since I’m recovering from an injury, I’ve been doing a ton of cross training. I have done some biking, but most of it has been done in the pool through swimming and aqua-jogging. Aqua-jogging is definitely my favorite form of cross training. It seems the most like running, and the experiences I have had aqua-jogging have been…I guess you could say…interesting.
I think the funniest time was during this summer with Janet Leet (the owner of Sub 5 Camp) and her son Michael. We decided to go to her neighborhood wave pool to mix things up. It definitely did. Whenever the waves came on we all almost drowned from rafts going over our heads or just from how high the water went. We laughed the whole time and whenever we talk about it, still do.
My aqua-jogging vest also caused some controversy. A lifeguard tried to kick me out of the pool because I guess you’re not allowed to wear personal flotation devices. Oops… We wanted to go back to the wave pool another time, but unfortunately we never got around to going back.
Last week, I was lucky enough to be able to aqua-jog while the swim team was practicing. Fortunately, LT has a huge pool so there was plenty of room for me to aqua-jog and I wasn’t in the way of anyone. The swim team was very welcoming and it was really cool to watch their practice while I did my workout.
I hope everyone’s training and racing is going well! Good luck if you’re racing this weekend!

I think that the saying, “Everything happens for a reason,” definitely describes my life well. Things that have happened which seem really horrible at first always have good come out of them. My iron deficiency sophomore year is a perfect example of this. I thought that learning how to eat better and gaining extra mental strength for during races were going to be what was going to come out of it. I was right about that, but I seem to gain more and more from the experience all the time.

During my times of being iron deficient (and being unable to get my iron levels higher for a little while) I was fortunate enough to meet Dr. Holly Benjamin out of University of Chicago Hospitals. (Dr. Benjamin, this is your shout out!) She has so much knowledge about everything. From iron levels to injuries, she knows about everything that can affect athletes. In addition to monitoring my iron levels, she has also helped me with my injury. She wrote me a prescription to use the only Alter-G treadmill in the Chicagoland area!

If you don’t know what an Alter-G treadmill is, it was developed by NASA for astronauts returning from the space station with muscles that had atrophied. In addition to helping these astronauts, it has also helped athletes continue to train while they have injuries.

So now, I go to Athletico in Chicago for physical therapy twice a week. I like physical therapy a lot since I want to be a physical therapist when I grow up. My physical therapist Pam Lasky is awesome. Besides making me stronger, she also makes me laugh. She answers any questions I have about my possible future career too.

Well, back to the Alter-G…it is really an amazing piece of technology. First you put on a pair of scuba shorts and then zip into a little pod that is on the treadmill. It then registers your weight so it can adjust the gravity levels within the pod so you can control how much weight you want to run with. Then you just adjust the speed and get ready to run :).

I hope that everyone’s training and racing is going well. Good luck if you’re competing this week!

Hi Everyone!

Mmmm...Rugby's Ferrous Sulfate Elixer...Now that's some good stuff
Last Monday I celebrated my own special holiday: Iron Day. It is to remember the day I found out two years ago that I was iron deficient. I got the idea from my freshman Biology and present Human Anatomy and Physiology teacher Mr. Stormont. Every year, he has his own holiday: Linkage Fest, where he celebrates being colorblind by wearing mismatched clothes and teaching his students about being colorblind. The only thing I do for Iron Day is have my dad make an iron rich meal of bison burgers on his George Foreman Grill. Yum! My mom also makes her own meal because she won’t try them. Hahaha.

The reason I celebrate Iron Day is to remember my first big setback in running and to remind myself that I can get through anything that is thrown at me throughout my running career and my life.

Unfortunately, my iron deficiency hasn’t been my only setback in cross country. I have my injury this year that took a little bit longer to heal than it was supposed to. It took eight weeks! (I blame it on my heavy backpack and all of the stairs at LT) Since I don’t want to be out again for that long any time soon, I have decided to take it slow coming back.

I think that the hardest thing about being injured this season is that the conditions have been amazing so everyone is running really fast. Last year every race seemed to be muddy from all of the rain we had. I wonder how fast I could have run last year if we had this weather then. I wonder how fast Lindsay Flanagan could have run!

Right now, I’m just looking forward and getting excited for what’s to come. I’m visiting a college next weekend and am looking forward to meeting the team there/seeing more about what the school has to offer. I’m also pumped to run on the Alter G again tomorrow!

Happy Iron Day to everyone! Hopefully nobody is feeling fatigued while racing this season, but if you are, get your ferritin levels checked! Good luck with training and racing!

Katherin Rehn :)

Hey Everyone!

The last two weeks have been so busy, but really fun!

Physical Therapy has been going really well. I’m getting good runs in on the Alter G. It’s really helpful so I don’t have to have the full force of running on my legs everyday as I’m building up my mileage. Athletico is really happy I mentioned them on this so I get to take as many tootsie rolls as I want for being a good patient :). Since it’s getting close to Halloween, they are now in a special trick or treat bowl with a hand that is supposed to grab you and laugh as you’re taking a tootsie roll. I guess I’m easily amused since I love making those things go off. One day as I walked in, I kept putting my hand in to make it go off and jerking it away right away so my hand wasn’t grabbed. For some reason, it wasn’t working. After doing that about ten times and wondering why it was going off, the receptionist told me the bowl wasn’t on. Whoops!

My college visit last weekend was really fun! The girls on the team were really nice and welcoming while the coach was really funny and seemed very dedicated to getting everyone on the team better and reaching their goals. There was also a lot of academic support there which is really great. I also went to my first ever concert and college football game. Both were really cool especially because they won the game! I’m really excited for the future visits I am planning and getting closer to making this difficult, life-changing decision!

It was nice to have a relatively relaxed weekend just doing a bunch of homework, some running, and watching the Prenationals races and hilarious interviews. I’m hoping that I’ll be racing there next year!

Hope everyone has had a great last two weeks and continues to in the future!

-Katherin Rehn :)

P.S. I heard a very interesting question last week. If you were driving around in a vehicle at the speed of light, what would happen if you turned your lights on?
